Something new is coming to the Indianapolis Zoo. This exhibit is the only one of its kind in North America.
A new troop of captivating monkeys has arrived at the Indianapolis Zoo, the only zoo in North America where visitors can meet this species of macaque. Their new habitat in the Oceans area of the Zoo is perfectly suited for them because they are the only species of macaque who swim throughout their entire lives.
As guests walk past the penguins in Oceans, they will start to learn about these unique monkeys and come upon a large underwater viewing window. Outdoors they will find multiple viewing windows to observe the macaques jumping, climbing and having fun.
All the monkeys in the troop are part of a strict social hierarchy, with more dominant individuals guiding behavior. This order helps balance competition with cooperation, allowing members of the troop to share resources and avoid conflicts. One way long-tailed macaques show friendship is to engage in grooming. Grooming each other maintains friendships and creates alliances that are communicated to other members of the troop.
Long-tailed macaques, which are the Zoo’s fifth primate species, are commonly found near water throughout the islands of Southeast Asia. Macaques are a unique group of 20 different monkey species who live in diverse habitats including tropical forests, snowy mountains and urban areas. These confident swimmers will take to the water to cool off, escape predators, catch food or even just to play.
Macaque hands are very similar to human hands. Like us, they use them for grasping, catching, climbing and even using tools. They make their own hammers out of rocks and use it to pound the shell of a crab or snail to access the food inside. Long-tailed macaques sometimes pluck hair from people’s heads to use to floss their teeth!
Highly adaptable, intelligent and curious, these monkeys have figured out how to survive in areas, both urban and rural where human populations are growing. Tourists travel far to see these monkeys — some people consider them sacred, others view them as pests.
As the human population expands, humans and wildlife share the same space. Hoosiers can learn to share urban spaces with wildlife, just like people in Southeast Asia have learned to share space with long-tailed macaque.

What to Pack In Your Hospital Bag for You and Baby
I am a 5 time mom, so I feel I am pretty knowledgeable in what to bring and what isn't necessary to bring in your hospital bag. Let's start with the obvious items for during labor:
- Lip balm/chapstick- your lips will get dry. Hospital air is so dry plus you usually won't be drinking much while in labor so its a good thing to have.
- Hair bands/pony tail holders- If you have longer hair these are great to have. They are great from keeping your hair out of your face and allowing you to focus on other things
- Slipper- The hospital has the non-slip socks for walking during labor, but if you have a comfy pair of slippers I would recommend those.
- Old nightgown- If you don't want to wear their hospital gowns the whole time you are in labor bring your own comfortable nightgown. I would recommend one you don't mind getting dirty and possibly ruined though.
- Birthing Ball- some hospitals now-a-days have them, but if yours doesn't or you have your own you want to use I would bring that
- Picture ID, Insurance card, and hospital paperwork- these items are needed when you arrive at the hospital to have your baby. Some hospitals have you fill out paperwork ahead of time to save you time when it's baby time.
- Your birth plan- some women have them others don't. If you have any requests during labor and for after let them be known and they will usually be followed as long as things go OK. Remember that things may change and they can't always be followed exactly.
- Something to make you relax- some labors can be very long. Even the short ones having something to help you relax is very helpful. Maybe make a playlist of music to listen to during labor. Bring a few good books to read. If puzzles or puzzle books help, bring those. If you have a favorite movie or something, try that.
What about your labor coach/partner/spouse:
- camera/video camera- This is something very handy for taking pictures during/after labor or even taking video if wanted. Baby pictures are the best. Maybe even consider having someone there just to capture these wonderful moments so your labor partner can be there for you. Don't forget the charger, extra batteries, and memory cards.
- snacks- your coach may get hungry and thirsty too so snacks and/or money for the snack machines are great
- change of clothes
- their medicines they need unless they plan on going home
Now let's get to the items you will need for after labor
- Comfortable outfit for going home- remember you will still look pregnant and clothes will still be tight and you will be uncomfortable so bring something loose and comfy for going home
- Clothes for in hospital- some people like to just lay around in the hospital gown while they are there. Others can't stand them and prefer to wear their own clothes while there. The choice is yours.
- Cell phone- this will be great to contact those you want to to let them know baby has arrived. Also great for pictures and using social media to make the announcements. Don't forget your charger.
- Snacks- you will probably be hungry after labor and may not get a hospital meal for a few so bring snacks to help you recharge after your labor
- toiletries- most just use what the hospital provides, but if you prefer to use your own, then don't forget them
What do you need for the baby:
- Car seat- this should already be installed in the car and ready to go for bringing baby home
- going home outfit- this is essential as baby will need something to go home in. Clothes are normally provided for in hospital, but not for the trip home. Maybe bring newborn and 0-3 months because you will not know how big baby will e until he/she gets here.
- outfit for newborn pictures- some choose to just have them wear the going home outfit for pictures, others like an outfit or 2 just for pictures.
- Blanket- you get receiving blankets at the hospital, but if it is cold out, you might want to bring a warmer blanket for the trip home
What do I NOT need:
- jewlery
- diapers- pack a few in the diaper bag if you want for the ride home if you have a long trip or aren't going home right away, but the hospital provides diapers and you usually end up taking some home as once the packs are open they can't keep them.
- Medications- let the hospital and your doctor know about all medications ahead of time and those will be provided for you
- valuables
- pads and underwear- the hospital provides some lovely after birth underwear and huge pads that are designed for after birth
- bottles and formula- again you might pack in the diaper bag for the trip home but these are provided during your stay and often get some to take home again.

About the Book:
A Candle for My Mother is an inspirational story of a young woman from the Midwest, Lorraine Newton, who longed to travel the world despite being the mother of four young children. “I’m going to see places, come hell or high water!” Lorraine remarked, and she made it happen.Lorraine’s stories in the book are told in her own words from tape recordings she made before she died, and letters saved by a friend, detailing Lorraine’s family’s amazing experiences in Iraq and travels in Europe. Into the bubbling political cauldron of the Middle East in the 1950s ventured an American family. Iraq was not necessarily what Lorraine had in mind, but the country fit exotic to a tee. It conjured up “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves,” markets filled with silks and gold, and travel in Europe on vacations. Lorraine was about to embark on a grand adventure.
Pamela Newton never felt closer to her mom than when she was traveling, sometimes logging over 100,000 miles a year: “Mom’s adventurous spirit was with me on every trip, in every country, encouraging me to make the most of each moment.” The things that Pamela experienced on her business trips often triggered a remembrance of her mother and her childhood. Those memories became the reflections and gratitude's that Pamela expresses at the end of each chapter when visiting churches across the globe to light candles for her mother, a tradition she began in Westminster Abbey.
For readers who may be reminded of exciting memories from their childhood, A Candle for My Mother has been designed with pages interspersed throughout for writing personal reflections. Here a son or daughter can add their favorite pictures, recount “Best Day Ever” times, write a thank you to their mom, or include poems, musings, or thoughts. It is designed to be a gift to oneself or one’s mom. Read it, write in it and then give it to your mother…with gratitude.

Sleeve Stars Premium Knee Sleeve review
I received a Sleeve Stars Premium Knee Sleeve to review. I am a bigger woman, so I got the size large, the largest size they have available. It was a snug fit, but I didn't think it was too bad. After a little while it did start digging in some and then started rolling up on my leg. I was only able to wear it about an hour at a time before it would get uncomfortable. I feel if it ft a bit better the product would work wonders. It is an amazing product and designed great, just not made for heavier set people.
If you would like to check it out please visit here.
I have knee problems from years of playing basketball and this does help for the time I am able to use it. It is great for those who have knee problems but still want and or need too stay active.
Things to Do in The Cincinnati Area This Summer
If you are local to Cincinnati or will be traveling the area this summer here are some things to check out.
- Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens- This is a must do for the area. Lots of animals to see, including the famous hippo Fiona. The new gorilla world is amazing to see as well. There are lots of events over the summer to check out. If bought online tickets start at $17 for adults and $12 for kids. Parking is $10. Information about special events, special admission days, types of tickets and more can be found at http://cincinnatizoo.org.
- Newport Aquarium- If you love aquariums you have to visit this one. Octopi, Stingrays, Alligators, Penguins, Sharks and more. There is so much to see and do at Newport Aquarium. Tickets are $17.99 for kids and $24.99 for adults. For more information and to purchase tickets visit here.
- Kings Island- There is fun for everyone at Kings Island. The snoopy kids area has rides for kids of all ages. There are plenty of thrill rides and roller coasters for the adults and enthusiasts. Some of the roller coasters are marked as the best in the world!! There is even Soak City, the waterpark right at Kings Island, great for cooling off on a hot day. You can get daily tickets for as low as $44.99. Details and more information on the park can be found at visitkingsisland.com.
- Coney Island/Sunlight Pool- Another big summer favorite. Coney Island has all the rides and then hop on over to Sunlight pool to cool off. One reason this is a big favorite is unless you are going to ride or go in the pool you don't have to pay. This is great for parents who don't do rides, but want to take their kids to enjoy the rides without having to dish out a ton of money to do nothing. Tickets can be bought just for the pool, just for the rides, or both and they offer evening discounts for after 4pm. To buy your tickets or to check out the options and more visit coneyislandpark.com.
- Dart Rush- This is a new one we are really looking forward to checking out. Everyone likes laser tag. Well this uses Nerf Guns and have dart wars in a dart arena!! Doesn't that sound fun? It is located at Newport on the Levee and designed for ages 6 and up. You can bring your own blaster, or rent for them for an additional fee. The cost to play is $12/1 hour, $17/1.5 hours, and $22/2 hours. The rental costs are anywhere from $2-12 depending on the tier level of the blaster you choose.
