Cerebral palsy awareness month

March is cerebral palsy awareness month, and today, march 25 is national cerebral palsy awareness day. My son Louie, who is 3, is my precious cerebral palsy warrior. I will start by answering some common questions. What is cerebral palsy? Cerebral palsy is a group of disorders caused by damage to the brain that affects different motor functions resulting in physical disabilities. This damage can be before or during birth, or even in the first years of life. Louie's cerebral palsy is due to bacterial meningitis at 2 months old. What are symptoms of CP? There are different symptoms of cerebral palsy that can range in severity. A few common symptoms are: . difficulty holding head up . rigid or twisting limbs and body . loose or flacid limbs and body . missing developmental milestones Many people with cerebral palsy will experience other issues like seizures, vision or hearing problems, speech problems, and learning difficulties. Types of Cerebral Palsy: There are different types of CP... •Spastic: The most common type of CP that affects about 80% of people with CP. Depending on what parts of the body are affected, spastic CP can be described differently. •Spastic Diplegia/Diparesis: This is when there is an abnormality of or increase in muscle tone in which one or more extremities (more often the legs than the arms) is held in a rigid or tight posture. People with this form of CP can have trouble walking without support as the tightness causes their legs to stiffen, turn inward, and even cross at the knees (known as scissoring). •Spastic Hemiplegia/Hemiparesis: This type affects only one side of body and is more prevalent in the arms than the legs. •Spastic Quadriplegia/Quadriparesis: The most severe form of spastic CP which affect all four limbs as well as the other parts of the body. •Dyskinetic: This includes athetoid CP, choreoathetoid CP, and dystonic CP. It is most often associated with abnormal, uncontrollable, writhing movements of the arms and/or leg. People with these forms of CP may experience a variance in muscle tone and from too tight and rigid to too loose and floppy. •Ataxic: This type of CP is characterized by poor balance when they try to walk unsupported or with quick movements like writing or reaching for small objects.

It's the season for back to school. Lots of shopping to do. New clothes, new supplies, backpacks, lunchboxes oh my. School lists now a days can be quite crazy. My daughter is starting kindergarten this year. Her supply list is relatively mild compared to some I have seen. She needs:1 set of marker-8 colors-large size; 1 box of tissues; 1 bottle of white school glue; 4 glue sticks; 4 dry erase markers-chisel tip black; book bag-no wheels; 2 boxes of 24 count crayons; blunt end scissors-rounded tip; 1 pack of #2 pencils-sharpened; 1 2-pocket plastic folder; 1- 4 pack of Play Doh; 1 pack pencil top erasers; Girls-1 box gallon-sized Ziploc bags;blue plastic school box. I have seen some lists that ask for candy, 8 dozen pencils, reams of copy paper, paper plates, plastic utensils, napkins. Schools have a lack of funding and so it is being put on us as parents to supply the classroom. Then we have to pay the activity fee, which for my daughter is $50. In our district starting in 6th grade all math is now done online. They sit in math class on notebooks and do all math on the computer. This is all due to the new common core standards. They start preparing them for college in kindergarten. When I was in school in kindergarten we learned the alphabet, how to write our names, what our phone number and address was and how to count. Now before going into kindergarten they want them to be able to write their names, how to write and identify the alphabet, how to count to 20, be able to write numbers 0-10. They are teaching them what we used to learn in 1st grade. There is now homework in kindergarten. What do your kids supply lists include? Are the school fees insane? Sound off on common core.

spring cleaning tips and tricks

Ok it might be a little late but for those still doing spring cleaning here are some tips and ideas 1. Set deadlines: set dates to declutter and clean a room or area. 2.when cleaning out closets ditch anything beyond repair. For everything else decide if you want it or not. If you're unsure put a removable sticker on it. When you wear it remove the sticker. Anything left with a sticker at the end of the season should be donated or sold. 3. Hate that clutter under sinks? Only keep essentials there and store other things elsewhere. 4. Create a donation station for your family. Every time someone comes upon clothes that don't fit or something they no longer want or need to put it in the box. When it's full take it to your thrift store or donations center and repeat. 5. Garages are one place that gets major complaints. Designate zones for things like gardening, sports, tools, toys, ECT. Place hooks and shelves in each zone and keep everything in its zone. Clear out anything broken or that doesn't fit into your assigned zones. 6. Recruit a friend to help you. It's a lot easier to get rid of stuff when you have help, especially if they want to take things off your hands for you. 7. Start small. When you have a few minutes declutter a little. Clean out a desk drawer or cabinet. You will feel less overwhelmed. If you buy something new eliminate an old item.
