Earth Sciences Week

This year October 8-14 is Earth Sciences Week. This has been celebrated since 1998, started by the American Geosciences Institute to help the public gain a better understanding and appreciation for the Earth Sciences. This year celebrates 20 years and the theme is "Earth and Human Activity."  There are contests that you can enter that can be found here.

What are the Earth Sciences? There are 4 earth sciences. Geology is the primary type and is the study of the earth. Geology deals with the composition of Earth materials, Earth structures, and Earth processes. Meteorology is the science of the atmosphere. This is how we figure out and predict the weather. Oceanography is the study of the oceans. They study everything that makes up the oceans, and oceans are very important to our earth. Astronomy is the last type and is the study of the universe. This type studies the moon, the sun, the stars and anything beyond the earth.

Why is Earth Science Important? Earth is all around us. It is where we live and makes up everything surrounding us. We need to study and be aware of the earth sciences to be able to learn about it and be able to protect our resources. Environmental pollution, hurricane forecasts, any geological or geophysical information about other planets etc. are also interests of Earth Science. We need to study to learn about the climate and the way it changes, it can tell us why things went extinct and when and tell us about past cultures. We need to understand how the earth is made up in order to learn how to protect it and use it to our benefit while helping.

Help us celebrate this week and get awareness out there.
