Therapies and Ect. Galore

Having 4 kids with special needs we have done LOTS of therapy, both in a medical setting and at home. We have done speech, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. We have also gotten items, such as orthotics, that come along often with the therapies. Kaya when she was around 2-3 got her first pair of orthotics. Hers were called crickets. They were basically a shoe insert that added a little more support than normal. Once she outgrew those no other orthotics were needed, but now with her Ehlers Danlos diagnosis and being flat footed, we are soon going to be seeing pt and will likely be getting her a new pair of orthotics.
Louie had a different type of orthotic. His were called SMOs. He got his first pair at 13 months old. He had 4 different sets of them as he grew, his last set being around when he turned 4. They provided more support and helped keep him from toe walking. He no longer needs them, at least for the time being.
Bella never needed orthotics, and so far Silas hasn't but we will soon see what pt says as we were waiting until he was 2.5 to see how he was doing. We go for a pt follow-up for him next month. Kaya also sees pt next month.

We have always loved doing different sensory activities at home. Just having some fun with bubbles or play dough can be therapy. At a young age, play is therapy. It gets them using different muscles. We also used a little kids pool and would put balls or pillows and such and let them have a crash area, or sensory pit.

Of course to be where we are today it took lots of in hospital therapy visits. The kids worked hard in speech, ot, pt, and feeding therapy to get to where they are today, and we still have visits.

Therapy can be fun, but it can also be very exhausting. Weekly visits, working hard, (well really playing, half the time they don't know they are doing work), fighting to get them to meet milestones. Sometimes therapy was there just to get them to loosen up and be able to move. Many a therapy days were spent with stretches and movements. While it is hard work, I cherish the moments we get to watch and experience, thanks to therapy.

Bella has done speech and occupational therapy, Kaya has done speech, pt and ot, Louie and Silas both have done speech, ot, pt, and feeding therapy.

Potty Training

We are into the final diaper phase. Our youngest is potty training!!!! Hopefully shortly we will be all done with diapers. Already having 3 done, number 4 should be easy, right?

One thing I have learned through all my potty training experience is let them do it at their own pace. They will potty train when they are ready, and pushing them before they are ready may make them more unwilling. My girls were relatively easy. They started potty training around 2. By time my oldest was 3 and my younger daughter was 2 they were both pee trained. Now getting my oldest to poop on the potty, that was the hard part. she wanted nothing to do with it, until her sister was doing it and she decided to follow suit and neither looked back.  Now my older son he was completely different from the girls. We started trying to potty train him around 2.5 and he would do it every now and then, but nothing consistent at all. Shortly before his 4th birthday he decided one day he was going to start going on the potty and has since. Now we have reached our youngest's journey in potty training. He decided himself that he was ready a few days ago. He ripped his diaper off, ran to the potty and has been going pretty consistently. Today he decided to poop on the potty. This is going great!!! He is taking control and I am letting him.

Most of the day we are home so he goes without a diaper so that he is free to use the bathroom as he needs to. I have never used pull-ups with any of my kids. I have found them to be a waste. We did the diaper-less approach for a little while then would go straight to underwear. If they go to the bathroom in a diaper they are used to that it doesn't bother them as much. When they go in underwear they feel it more and are more likely to not want to do it, so it is a sort of motivation.

This is a step we are very grateful for. With the Chiari and everything, we weren't sure if he would have any damage and have the ability to feel when he has to go or to hold it to the potty. We never know what to expect for anything when it comes to him, so this came as a very happy surprise. When it comes to our kids, we take nothing for granted.

A favorite part of every potty training experience has been when they were doing good for a few weeks and we got to go shopping for their first underwear. My oldest I think she chose Minnie Mouse and my other daughter went for Disney Princess. My older son went for a cars theme. Silas currently loves Batman and mickey Mouse and Paw Patrol so those will likely be the ones on the radar when we go shopping in a few weeks.

While I definitely love the baby stage, the diaper era is one I will not miss. We have had at least one kid in diapers for the past 7 years. We will be glad to not have any more diapers, and be able to move on to the big kid stages and experience life without diaper changes. Next phase up is having all 4 kids in school. We still have 3 years for that stage to be complete, but we enjoy the time that we have and take things a day at a time.

Just remember when potty training, let them take the lead they will do it when they are ready, not when you are ready.

Blooms and Berries Farm Market presents Fall on the Farm

If you are local to me here is an awesome fall activity to check out.

Fall on the Farm offers a fun-packed day for the entire family at Blooms & Berries Farm Market in Loveland, Ohio. Activities include a 30-minute hayride around the farm and through the woods that stops in the pumpkin patch, a 7-acre corn maze that features a who-done-it game called "The Great Migration Mystery," a children's play area, the bucking cow train, farm animals and more.

Fall on the Farm is a great way to spend a beautiful autumn weekend with your family, making memories that will last a lifetime. When you pull up to our 61-acre farm, the first thing you notice is our big, beautiful barn. If you look closely, you'll notice that the truss under the front porch is made from reclaimed barn wood that is over 150 years old. This speaks to the tradition and heritage that is at the heart of our farm. The front of our barn is decorated with beautiful flowers, pumpkins, etc. making for a beautiful backdrop for family pictures.

Speaking of pictures, if you visit during the first week or two of the season, our 2-acre sunflower field should be in bloom (please call ahead of time to see if we are in peak bloom). Your family will love the walking path through the middle of the sunflowers.

Our farm is geared toward family. For just $8 per person on weekdays and $11 per person on the weekends, you have an all-access pass to the fun activities mentioned above. Visit on a Toddler Tuesday for 1pm story time and - 1/2 price admission for kids 2-4 with paying adult. We also have ample opportunities for you to shop in our market barn. Don't miss our fresh-pressed apple cider and caramel apples. New this year, we're also making fudge, cookies and apple crisps. Please, bring the family and spend the day with us!

Fall On The Farm 2017 runs from Sept 23rd through Oct 31st. Please check our website, www.fallonthefarm.com, for current hours and hayride times.
